Home grown pollution prevention strategies are being prepared for
export to the developing world under a program designed to
synthesize industrial and environmental needs. The UI chapter of Engineers
for a Sustainable World has secured federal funding to come up
with a plan to help Xicotepec, Mexico, respond to development-
driven environmental degradation.

adequate sanitation. In the near future, Julio may be one of
250,000 children that die each week in our world as a result of

Some aspiring teachers know early on
that they want to work in schools with large Hispanic populations.
They study Spanish, if it’s not their native tongue. They
student-teach in schools known to have high concentrations of
Hispanic students. They may even travel abroad to see Hispanic
cultures firsthand.

out to Mexico: Children send school supplies to Xicotepec

Lincoln Elementary students finished
off their school year with a flourish Wednesday, giving their
extra school supplies to fellow students in Mexico. The students
gathered their extra supplies, including markers, crayons and
pencils, and crated them in eight boxes for the Iowa City Rotary
Club to deliver to Xicotepec, a small town in the state of Juarez
in southern Mexico.

change

IOWA CITY -- Craig Just can get a
little teary-eyed when he talks about the needs in Xicotepec,
Mexico, where he spent spring break with a Rotary Club group of
50, about half of whom were from Iowa City. The tears come when he
thinks of Julio, a 7-year-old he met last year. This year, Just
learned that Julio's liver is three times bigger than it should
be, probably from drinking contaminated water. "Every stream
and river in the area is a sewer," he said. "Maybe
someday we will see improvement."
